Sustainable buildings must have integrated design teams, says a report by the Specialist Engineering Alliance (SEA).

The report, Sustainable Buildings Need Integrated Teams, slammed traditional procurement practices in the construction sector.

It said that a confused communication process coupled with high costs acted against the construction of sustainable buildings.

The document recommends the appointment of an integrated project delivery team at the very start of any project.

The recommendations were collated from review of case studies and organisations’ reports from the Office of Government Commerce and the National Audit Office.

Specialist Engineering Alliance (SEA) published the report, in conjunction with the Sustainability Working Group.

Lord O’Neill of Clackmannan, president of the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ (SEC) Group, chaired the group behind the document.
