Held this year on the HQS Wellington, this annual event is a chance for the CIBSE President to hand out awards and thank those who have contributed to the work of the institution.

David Vincent received an Honorary Fellowship, having spent more than 30 years in the business of energy, policymaking and research.

The Hays Building Services President’s Prize is aimed at encouraging students to develop their potential and aim for excellence. Each university is asked to nominate two students in the final year of a building services course accredited by CIBSE in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Hong Kong.

This year’s winners were: first prize, Mitesh Patel (LSBU); second prize, Richard Unwin (LSBU); third prize, Silke Shipley (Heriot Watt).

The Happold Brilliant Award is intended to recognise excellence in the teaching of building services engineering and was won by Brunel University. Brunel offers three building services engineering masters programmes by flexible learning which are very successful. The visiting panel was also impressed by the quality of teaching materials and the knowledge and commitment of the staff.

Finally, presentations were made for technical papers published by the institution. The Napier Shaw Medal went to Dr Darren Robinson and Andy Stone for “A simplified radiosity algorithm for general urban radiation exchange”, published in the Building Services Engineering Research and Technology Journal.

The Carter Bronze Medal was presented to Dr David Campbell, Dr Michael Gormley and Professor John Swaffield for the paper published in the Building Services Engineering Research and Technology Journal on “Pressure transient control: Part II – simulation and design of a positive surge protection device for building drainage networks”.

Low Carbon Performance Awards

CIBSE has launched the Low Carbon Performance Awards 2008 to celebrate real, measurable progress in delivering carbon savings in buildings.

As well as recognising the achievements of low carbon professionals, buildings and projects, the event will publicise them to the building services sector, to its clients and to the wider public.

The awards ceremony will take place on 6 February at the Gros-venor House Hotel in London as part of the CIBSE annual dinner.
