So our much publicised road pricing scheme has been cancelled. Call me an old cynic, but I think not.

The Department for Transport has decided not to proceed with road pricing "at this stage". In other words, it has been shelved until a more opportune moment. Nearly 2 million people signed the anti-road pricing petition in February this year. The next election may be less than two years away and any government proposing road pricing on a national scale would be wiped out. This is another attempt to woo the electorate; first we have inheritance tax changes, now road pricing is dropped.

Road pricing was proposed as a means to eliminate serious congestion and gridlock, and to encourage public transport use. The current housing expansion programmes in every part of the UK cannot possibly be served by any existing public transport system as we know it. This will rear its ugly head again.
