Architect HLM has cut 10% of its workforce in the past month because it has completed most of its PFI work.
The company now employs 135 architects – down from 150.

The news comes on top of last week's announcement that international practice Gensler is to reduce its staff following a 30-day review.

Unlike Gensler, however, HLM said its cut was not a result of the economic impact of the terrorist attacks of 11 September.

HLM chairman Chris Liddle said the cut coincided with the completion of the first round of major PFI projects. He said most of the designs for the practice's PFI projects were now complete. Liddle added that fewer staff were needed as the firm entered a period of bidding for the next round of PFI projects.

We’ve had some reductions. We’re examining the shape of the future market

He said: "We've had some reductions. We're examining the shape and profile of the future market in order to get the balance of our team right."

Liddle said additional staff might be employed once the design stage of the latest PFI projects got under way.

A big proportion of HLM's work is PFI-related, and the practice is on the shortlist for a £140m PFI hospital scheme in Derby.
