The microgeneration industry has backed a report that calls for better funding for small-scale sustainable technologies.

The government-commissioned report, The Growth Potential for Microgeneration in England, Wales and Scotland, said government policies should be supported by legally binding targets and improved loans and grants. It estimated that if nine million microgeneration systems, such as solar panels and wind turbines, were installed by 2020 they could generate as much energy as five nuclear power stations.

The report suggested incentives such as 50% equipment grants and low-interest loans. Dave Sowden, head of the Micropower Council, said the report was the most “robust” evidence yet for increasing microgeneration.
