Construction Manager has some new ears and eyes. Meet the new editorial advisory board who will be providing us with comment and guidance in future. Our thanks go to the retiring board for their time and input over the years.

The President

Martin Chambers is programme director for the £50m refurbishment of Birmingham New Street station. He has also worked for Wimpey, Mace, Bovis Lend Lease and Laing O’Rourke, starting out as a trainee QS.

The Major controctor

Vaughan Burnand joined Shepherd Construction 13 years ago, moving up the ranks to become chief executive in 2003. MCIOB Burnand, one of the industry’s reformers, has roles that include chairman of the Major Contractor’s Group Health and Safety Committee and director of Constructing Excellence.

The SME

Mark Beard’s early career was spent working for two major UK contractors and a cost consultancy in Sydney, Australia. In 1989 he became a director of Beard and in 1999 managing director. Beard’s goals are to run a modern business, support his employees and look after his customers.

The Designer

John Eynon, FCIOB and chartered architect, is principal design manager at Wates Construction, which he joined in 2002 from Carillion. His varied career has included running his own architectural business.

The Planner

David Hackforth is head of planning and transport at Milton Keynes Council, where he has worked for 15 years. He is in demand as an adviser and speaker due to his role in the development of Milton Keynes.

The Logistics Expert

Gary Sullivan is co-founder of Wilson James which is pioneering developments such as consolidation centres. Sullivan, who started his career in the armed forces, has also worked for the United High Commission for Refugees setting up humanitarian aid and logistics in former Yugoslavia.

The Barrister

Barrister and chartered arbitrator Peter Collie practices construction law from chambers in Birmingham, London and Bristol. He started out with a small contractor as an apprentice bench joiner, training as a QS. An FCIOB, Collie was called to the Bar in 1994.

The Sustainability Expert

Bob Lewis MCIOB is principal sustainability consultant at Taylor Wimpey, providing advice to various parts of the business, having worked his way up through Taylor Woodrow from architectural technician. He took up his current role in 2000.

The Trade Contractor

Daniel Fincham, managing director of Alltask, started his career with a building maintenance contractor. Inspired to do better by the poor service he witnessed, he later set up his own scaffolding company which has now expanded to include brickwork, maintenance and civil engineering.

The CIOB

Michael Brown, deputy chief executive at the CIOB, is responsible for policy and external relations and the institute’s international work. Previously he worked in industry and in higher education. He has overseen CIOB’s establishment in South Africa and China.
