Changes to the way Building Regulations are amended are set to be introduced under a modernisation of the Building Control system.

The document, The Future for Building Control, sets out a series of options on how reform should proceed. These include:

  • Providing greater enforcement powers for local authorities to tackle persistent offenders
  • Providing customer guidance to help with specific building work or types of problems
  • Moving away from a piecemeal approach to reviewing Building Regulations to a fixed-term review cycle with planned pauses and clear indication of future changes
  • Assessing the options to ensure building control bodies are properly resourced
Launching the paper, Minister for Building Regulations Angela Smith said: “There was a clear case for reform of the Building Control system.” www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id
