The 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671: 2008) is finally upon us after being published in January.

The 17th Edition will be phased in during a six-month transition period up to July. By then, all commercial, domestic and industrial installations must be designed, installed and tested to the specification laid out in BS 7671:2008.

It includes changes necessary to maintain technical alignment with European harmonisation documents, including changing regulation numbers to bring them in line with IEC numbers.

Requirements have been added for protection against injury and damage of property caused by voltage disturbances and electromagnetic influences.

A detailed overview of some of the changes can be found in EMC’s December issue. Visit www.emconline.co.uk and read ‘The bible rewritten’ for further information.

The ECA is running a series of courses to help contractors understand and comply with the new regulations.
