Company directors get the least amount of sleep of any profession – 5.9 hours a night – but tradesmen aren’t far behind, clocking up a measly six hours. According to a survey of 5,200 people by hotel chain Travelodge, marketing executives get the most sleep with a whopping 8.5 hours on average, while recruitment consultants come in second with a refreshing eight hours (how can they sleep so well?).

If sleeping is a problem for you, Travelodge’s director of sleep (yes, really), Wayne Munnelly, recommends the following steps:

  • Make sure your bedroom is at 18 deg C.
  • Have a warm bath before bed.
  • No caffeine or food after 7pm.
  • Dim lighting in the bedroom and spend time in dim light before you go to bed.
  • Write down anything that’s worrying before you go to bed.
