Following the Australian government’s announcement that by 2010 it will phase out incandescent bulbs, Clive Houlston, managing director of Mr Electric, has called for the UK to do the same.

“While the government is endlessly debating the problems of rising energy demands, costs and the spectre of climate change… it doesn’t necessarily have to be a big shift to make a huge impact,” said Houlston.

“In fact, even the smallest change can make the biggest difference. By changing a single incandescent bulb for a compact fluorescent you are omitting 30% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The change also saves about £7 per year in the UK,” claimed Houlston. He said a higher tax may be the only solution.
