How I applaud Alan Crisp’s letter drawing attention to the anomalies created by the new Part P (‘Regulation hell’, EMC, Feb 2005, p5).

Having started in 1960 as an indentured apprentice, I worked my way through the ranks to become branch director of a national m&e contractor.

Mindful of my success and opportunities given to me, I always aimed to give something back to training. I employed three to four apprentices each year; made myself available as a trade assessor for the AM1 skill test; became a member of the JTL training committee and the ECA business development and best practice committees, and I’ve also been a past chair of my local ECA branch.

I am now semi-retired but I take it as a total insult that my 45 years’ skill and dedication to the industry will now not permit me to attend to any domestic wiring, my own included. Will I retrain for Part P? Bloody right I won’t!
