Ivan Chan (Buro Happold)

In a category set up to recognise the talents of young professionals and identify future industry leaders, the judges were impressed by the “quantifiable achievements” and “proactive nature” of Ivan Chan.

They were particularly struck by his active involvement in the professional institutions. He has been involved with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ young members board for over three years, helping to promote engineering to students and young people, and has been the board’s representative and committee member for the Greater London Region. His efforts to promote the industry to youths has also seen him working with the CITB’s Construction Ambassadors Scheme since 2002. Ivan also actively participates in CIBSE activities and presented at the China Focus Event in December 2005.

Since graduating from South Bank University he has undertaken an MSc in Environmental Design and Engineering and strives to continue fulfiling his passion for sustainable design.

Edward Clark (Arup)

Edward Clarke is cited by his employer Arup as a design orientated and architect-friendly role model for the public health engineering industry. His enthusiasm and excellence are dispelling concerns at the firm about skills shortages. After joining the firm as a graduate of Imperial College, Edward immediately began supporting his peers by playing a lead role in the public health graduate committee. He has written several CIBSE and in-house guides and has recently gained chartered status of CIBSE.

Michal Koscielniak (SVM Consulting Engineers)

A 24 year old graduate engineer from Poland, Michal has achieved notable success in the industry since his arrival in the UK in 2004. His determination and commitment saw him gain a distinction in his Building Services Engineering degree at Glasgow Caledonian University before joining SVM Consulting Engineers as a graduate mechanical design engineer. During 2005 he played an integral part on a number of projects including heating within PFI schools and the ventilation of Glasgow’s Kings Theatre.

Benjamin Lin (Arup Associates)

Benjamin Lin joined Arup Associates as a graduate engineer having completed a degree in electronics and electrical engineering at the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London. Having shown a keen interest and aptitude in the area of lighting design, the firm awarded him a full scholarship to pursue lighting studies at the Bartlett, University College London. He has worked on several high profile lighting projects and was a finalist in the 2006 CIBSE Young Lighter of the Year awards.

Andrew Rhodes (Arup)

Andrew Rhodes joined the Sheffield branch of Arup in 2004 and has since become a valued member of the team. A vocal supporter of environmentally considerate construction, he became a graduate member of CIBSE in 2004 has since joined ASHRAE. He took on the role of internal cpd co-ordinator for Arup’s mechanical engineering team and has arranged around 25 cpd events. Out of work, he contributes to Arup’s design forum and is helping to form direct links with universities as part of a future recruitment strategy.
