Project consultant CNP is to project manage the £50m transformation of one of the main shopping areas in Castleford, Yorkshire.

The scheme for developer Edinburgh House Estates aims to underpin the £125m regeneration of Castleford town centre. It is due for completion in 2007.

Known as the Castleford Project, the regeneration scheme complements Yorkshire Forward's Five Towns Urban Renaissance.

The shopping centre plans will improve access, allow for larger retail units to be created on two levels, new external finishes and the extension of the existing mall.

One of the first phases to be undertaken involves the relocation of a railway underpass, which links existing car parks and residential units to the south to Carlton Lanes. More than 70,000 trips are made each week through the underpass.

David Nurser, Joint Managing Director of CNP, said: "We are delighted to be involved in a major regeneration project of this scale, which will have major positive benefits for Castleford. As well as extending the town's main shopping centre Carlton Lanes, CNP will oversee the development of a new 58 room hotel, new supermarket, a residential scheme and new car parking facilities."
