Yorkshire skiers and sledgers unable to reach the Alps this winter can enjoy their sports indoors thanks to ABB equipment.

The firm’s distribution equipment was specified and installed by electrical contractor Balfour Kilpatrick at the new Xscape leisure complex in Castleford, West Yorkshire. The equipment will control the lighting and power at the £64 million centre, which includes a 16 m ice-climbing wall and 190 m of snow covered slopes.

ABB supplied 20 Protecta distribution boards with miniature circuit-breakers rated to 32 A. These were pre-wired to reduce on-site installation time. Standard 100 A switch disconnectors were fitted to the incomers, along with 50 OT range enclosed load break switches and 45 OS range enclosed switch fuses.

To minimise peak demand and energy use some of the boards were fitted with contactors and time clocks, which switch off lights automatically at preset times.
