York City Council is to install carbon-free, sustainable heat sources in a drive to cut the city’s carbon emissions by 25 per cent by 2010.

Buildings account for 70 per cent of the council's carbon emissions, so efforts will be focused on carbon-beating systems in the local authority's buildings.

Under the initiative the Joseph Rowntree School is to get a biomass boiler, which will provide ten per cent of its energy needs, while York High School will be heated entirely by biomass power. The new pool at Oaklands Sports Centre will be fitted with solar panels to provide 82 MW of energy per year. The park and ride ticket office will be heated by a ground source heat pump.
