The construction industry enjoyed continued growth during the third quarter and remains positive about prospects for the coming 12 months.

This is the view of the latest Construction Industry Trade Survey from the Construction Confederation and the Construction Products Association. The optimism comes despite difficult trading conditions and slower economic growth.

Michael Ankers, chief executive of the Construction Products Association, said: “An increase in public sector building work helped sustain industry growth during the third quarter, offsetting a weakening in private sector activity.

“The industry anticipates that further increases in public sector work will sustain industry growth over the next 12 months as the government strives to deliver planned investment in schools, hospitals, housing and transport infrastructure.”

Building contractors reported increased pressure on margins from rising material and labour costs and a deceleration in tender price inflation. Skilled labour availability has also deteriorated.
