Wonderwall: A notorious 10-storey wall, part of a 1970s housing estate, is to be preserved for posterity. The Byker Wall, in Newcastle, was designed by Ralph Erskine and will be listed on the advice of English Heritage. Newcastle council has welcomed the news, despite previously threatening to demolish parts of the estate.

Heritage minister Andrew McIntosh said: “Post-war British architecture is full of examples of innovative, practical approaches to design, reflecting the realities of life in the second half of the 20th century.” Sites in Doncaster, Reading and Hounslow will also be listed.
