9:50AM Foster and Partners-designed structure planned for City football ground

Manchester City Football Club has been awarded planning permission for a 85-metre high wind turbine designed by architect Foster and Partners. The turbine will power that stadium itself and nearby homes.

The city council is hoping to get the turbine, which will produce about two megawatts of electricity, operational by next year. Planning spokesman for the council Neil Swannick told the BBC that the development was "an iconic statement of Manchester's commitment to renewable energy".
