Because it looks like copper

But it isn’t. It’s Flagon SRF fleece-backed polyester reinforced membrane in a copper green finish. The dome of the Time & Tide pub in Hartlepool was reconstructed at ground level and then hoisted into place. So the membrane, from Flag UK, had to be flexible to cope with the lifting as well as being long-lasting and maintenance free.

To get water off this very big roof quickly

The extension of St Pancras station in London, part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link that opens in 2007, will see the station double in length and width, with a mammoth 15 platforms in all. Geberit Syphonic Roof Drainage uses horizontal pipework that can be concealed in the roof space, avoiding the network of down pipes that a conventional gravity system would require.

To keep the concrete dry

Taylor Woodrow is upgrading Heathrow’s car park 1A, and it doesn’t want any water getting in to worsen rebar corrosion. So the movement joints in the upper roof deck have to be waterproof. Compibrand’s Superspan expansion joints fit the bill, accommodating multi-directional joint movement and dynamic loading from slow-moving vehicles.

Because rain, rain won’t go away... through clay

Countryside Properties wanted a sustainable drainage system for its 57-house development in Papworth Everard, near Cambridge. But the clay soil in the area meant soakaways wouldn’t work, and a concrete underground storage device would have been expensive. So the firm plumped for Wavin Plastic’s AquaCell, a modular stormwater storage system. 7,260 AquaCell crates can store up to 1,450 cu m of water.

Because two-thirds of this house is underground

Barnwood Construction used over 1,500 cu m of Sika Watertight Concrete, batched locally by RMC, to construct the basement of this massive country home in the Costwolds. The library, a two-lane bowling alley, a 25m swimming pool, a squash court, plant room and the heated garage for 12 cars are all underground. Phew! Construction joints were sealed with Sika Injectoflex and Sikaswell S and P Systems and Sika Combiflex seals the joints between the ground floor slab and retaining walls.
