Slim 78mm profiles house 28mm double-glazed units and offer a high-spec maintenance-free solution to Part L compliance. Silverwood successfully survived 100 freeze/thaw cycles at BRE's Scottish test centre.

Nico has launched a user/installer-friendly range of window-restrictor friction hinges. A button release gives ease of opening while two-handed operation ensures child safety. The stainless steel hinges are available in 13mm and 17mm stack heights and in four sizes from 300mm to 600mm; only one hinge is required for sizes up to 400mm.

Systems company LB Plastics has added two more profiles to its co-extruded Sheerframe 6000 windows and door system. The two new profiles are a four-chambered version of the SW/SK 6004 Z casement section, plus a four-chambered medium mainframe.

Aluminium window and door maker Comar has introduced a Part L-compliant polyamide-insulated P.i range. Comar 5 P.i windows and Comar 7 P.i doors integrate thermally efficient 20mm polyamide barriers in a 60mm single or dual-colour profile.

Allgood subsidiary Appart has introduced an easy-to-fit tubular latch for residential doors. Called Omni-latch, the latch has a round profile, so there's no need to fit a mortised forend, while the circular strike plate makes the latch quick to fit. The latch comes in a 60mm or 70mm backset, and a bolt version is also available. Double internal springing gives quiet operation and low friction. The strength of the latch allows unsprung lever handles to be used for domestic doors. The company has also made its Jasper Morrison 17308 door handles from a new material. Appart says the material, AluGrey, offers all the benefits of anodised aluminium but is 50% harder wearing.

Newly formed Verosol has launched a twin roller blind. The motorised headbox contains two blinds, each made of a lightweight fabric coated with a thin layer of aluminium that reflects solar light and heat. Typically the window-side blind will be made of a transparent fabric while the room-side fabric will be semi-transparent, with the former opening automatically when the daylight level drops below a certain point.

Pilkington has added its Activ self-cleaning glass to its standard range following the conclusion of its UK launch programme, designed to ensure correct processing and handling. Activ's special coating exploits daylight and rain to continually clean itself, and the product has been popular in the replacement window market. The company has also unveiled Suncool and Optilam Brown versions of Activ for use in conservatories.

Dorma has released Manet Neu for internal sliding and pivoting glass doors and structural glazing. Like its Manet Concept predecessor, Manet Neu has countersunk, single-point fixings providing unobtrusive glazing support, but comes with a softer designed roller fitting for sliding doors and the location of one pivot point at the centre of the panel to reduce pinch hazards. Dorma has also launched free glass estimating software that asks. The DGES program lets estimators build in the costs of the glass itself and associated processing, and will print off a comprehensive quote and drawing.

BPT Security Systems has incorporated keypads on its Targha range of door entry panels. The backlit 12-key pad provides secure entry and removes the need for an access control system. The pads can store and recognise 100 codes, between three and five digits long, and can be used with any BPT system. Occupiers can buzz visitors from an audio or a video link.

Schuco has added 20 woodgrain and coloured laminated foil finish options to its Corona PVC-U range. Applied to white or brown base profiles, the foil is bonded to the inner/outer faces of the PVC-U. Corona windows and doors are reinforced with galvanised steel frames with a construction depth of 60mm or 70mm. The range can also be fitted with pre-inserted, weldable gaskets for sealing, glazing or a combination of the two. Dubbed Corona+, the system is available for internally beaded casements, tilt-turn and pivot windows plus entrance, French and tilt-slide doors.

Jeld-Wen has extended its paint and stain guarantees on external timber doors and windows. Paint will now carry a 10-year guarantee, while woodstain will be guaranteed for six years. The guarantees will cover blistering, cracking, flaking and erosion.

The company has also launched a new range of Boulton and Paul PVC-U windows, available in almost any size and style. The basic 1000mm window costs under £100 with low-E 24mm clear glazing.

Specialist paint manufacturer Avko has launched a new product, Avkote KS, for repainting and protecting PVC-U windows, doors and other building elements. The single-pack, water-based paint needs only one coat and is touch-dry in 20 minutes. The hard durable finish is water-resistant, and is available in a wide range of colours.

Geze has launched the Boxer double-action door closer that swings through 180 degrees. The operator can be integrated within the door leaf, with only a guide rail visible when the door is open. The Certifire-approved Boxer offers a solution for double-action fire doors set in prefabricated concrete flooring where floor springs can't be used. Closing force, closing speed, hydraulic latching action and back check are all easily and independently adjustable.

Kawneer has introduced its Finger Guard safety feature as a standard option on its 190-series doors. Finger Guard ensures the pivoting side of the door can't trap fingers as it opens and closes. It is particularly suitable for the health, education and leisure markets, where many users are children or adults with special needs. The Finger Guard employs a rounded hinge stile while a weathered adaptor profile fitted to the frame jamb forms a seal around the door stile as it rotates.

  • Door security device, the Door Defender (pictured right), has won the Daily Mirror Excellence in Enterprise Award. Originally designed to supersede the door chain, the simple, two-piece metal bar has evolved so that it works even when householders are out. The Door Defender allows householders to open the door a small way to identify callers, but will physically close the door to intruders attempting to force entry. Manufacturer G4 has just finished testing a version that can be built into the door frame.
  • Lintel maker Catnic has consolidated its operations on a single site and appointed three new directors to the board: Terry Churchill is in charge of sales, Huw Samuel of operations, and John Pryer of technical services and product development.
  • Barlow Group has rebranded its Barlow Architectural & Security division, using the new Frontline GB label for its aluminium windows, doors and physical security products. The division has moved to a new site in Sheffield and the new identity is designed to reflect the group’s international presence and give a better description of the products as first line of defence against weather and security threats.
  • Following its acquisition by Canadian company Allmar International, hinged steel-door supplier Omega Doors has adopted its parent’s business model of assembling doors to order. This involves treating steel doors like timber doors, with leaf slabs and frame sections being stored in modular sizes.
  • The Door and Shutter Manufacturers’ Association (DSMA) has set up a scheme to help settle on-site disputes over door spec, performance and safety. Armed with the DSMA’s Code of Practice, inspectors can give independent expert opinion on disputes, allowing parties to settle without going to court. The DSMA has also merged with the Association of Building Hardware Manufacturers (ABHM), boosting membership to 134. The ABHM will become a DSMA working group but both bodies will retain existing identities on websites and codes of practice.
