The main provisions of the WEEE Directive on producer responsibility and retailer take-back will now take effect from June 2006, rather than the initial date of January 2006.

This is due to government concerns that more time is required to establish an adequate network of facilities for the separate collection of WEEE from householders.

The government is also to work with the Environment Agency to prepare its role for registering producers. Registration is now expected to take place in January and February 2006. Detailed arrangements will be published to give producers time to properly prepare and submit their registrations.
