Robert Druce of W&L Installations has won the 2003 ECA Edmundson Award, fighting off stiff opposition from nearly 1000 eligible apprentices. Druce’s achievement was rewarded at the 29th Apprentice of the Year luncheon, hosted by Douglas McNair, managing director of Edmundson Electrical, who sponsor the event in partnership with the ECA.

To win the award Druce had to gain a high grade in the City & Guilds examination for electrical work and obtain a mark of above 95% in the industry skills test. He then faced a regional interview and was one of seven apprentices selected to go through to a final judging panel in London. Druce wins £1000 and a week in France and Germany as a guest of Cooper Lighting and Security.

“Out of 1000 of his peers, Robert came out top,” said Douglas McNair. “He was the unanimous choice of the judging panel against stiff competition.” He also praised Robert’s employers: “An award like this doesn’t happen by accident. It shows their attitude to training and development.” Steve Cox, joint md at W&L Installations, described Robert as: “very capable, technically competent, dedicated to his work and an asset to the company in every respect.”

Druce attended the College of North West London.
