Walsall council has granted planning permission to the £25m second phase of the overall £75m redevelopment of a grade II-listed former Shannons mill in the St Matthew’s Quarter in the city centre. The project by Norton & Proffitt Developments – a joint venture between St Modwen Properties and Goold Estates – will ultimately provide 45,000ft² of office space, a supermarket and 20,000ft2 of further retail space and 86 flats, half of which are for Accord Housing Association.

Planning consent has also been given to a £20m scheme by Assael Architecture and developer the Grainger Trust to redevelop a former optical factory. Ross Optical Works in Lambeth, south London had lain largely dormant for a number of years and had to be re-zoned from being for employment to residential use. It will now become 2500ft² of office space and 94 flats – one-third of which will be affordable.
