Two schemes designed to help save the planet

Contractors have just completed the first phase of South West EcoHomes' first scheme at Great Bow Yard in Langport, Somerset. The finished phase comprises 12 private-sale homes, which are energy efficient and were built using local labour and local, recycled and organic materials wherever possible. Homes were designed by architect Stride Treglown. The next phase will restore a listed warehouse into office and community space.

Six homes to be built at New Earswick, York, will test ideas for a 540-home development in York. Architect Cole Thompson Anders won a competition by client Joseph Rowntree Foundation with its environmentally conscious design, which is now seeking planning approval. The homes, designed to attain EcoHomes Excellent standard, will have green features such as timber frame construction, solar panels and water use reduction measures.
