Quarmby construction site manager Gary McMillan takes hold of an 11th-century iron key, just one of a number of artefacts discovered during the redevelopment of commercial and retail properties on the Spurriergate site in York.

The Yorkshire contractor also found artefacts from as far back as the 5th and 9th centuries. The site has been the focus of an intensive two-year archaeological investigation by Map Archaeological Consultancy running right alongside the site demolition and excavation programme.

The redevelopment will be completed in 2007.
