Unite organised a rally with the aim of securing stronger employment protection for those within the construction industry and to ensure all workers are covered by UK national agreements.

The ‘Respect in Construction’ rally took place on 2 January, starting at Whitworth Park in Manchester.

The union believes national agreements are currently being undermined by the use of agencies.

According to Unite, employers are not respecting the agreements, which were designed to provide a level playing field for all construction workers and guarantee minimum standards on pay, skills, health, safety and welfare.

Unite is demanding that construction firms use directly employed workers who are covered by national agreements.

Unite also wants a shop steward for each trade on every site, along with union safety reps, to improve the industry’s health and safety record.
