Small firms in the UK are being advised that they could be missing out on the government contracts available on the Supply2.gov.uk website.

Thousands of government contracts could be accessed by the firms across the UK who sign up to government website, which launched back in 2006.

Supply2.gov.uk claims to be the only official government lower-value contract portal, and was created to provide smaller businesses with public sector contract opportunities below £100,000.

Over 123,000 companies have signed up to the site, however the government is attempting to raise the site’s profile in the light of the recession.

Secretary of State Lord Mandelson said: “Every year the government spends many billions of pounds on public sector contracts. It is vital that we actively help small and medium sized companies take advantage of these business opportunities. In the current economic climate this is more important than ever. The supply.2gov.uk website is a crucial tool for this.”

Suppliers who are signed up to the site receive advice on how best to access government contracts, as well as daily email alerts notifying them of new opportunities relevant to their business.
