The Engineering Council UK (ECUK) and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) have signed a memorandum of understanding that could open up new areas of work for UK engineers and engineering companies.

Currently, China has no national system for accrediting engineering programmes and CAST has been given the task of creating one and making sure it is compatible with current international practice.

The agreement will involve the two organisations collaborating on matters relating to engineering education and degree accreditation systems. It will also establish a basis for ECUK support of Chinese entry into the Washington Accord.

Current members of the Washington Accord are the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Hong Kong, South Africa, Japan and Singapore. Under the Accord each country recognises the other’s accredited degrees, meaning that holders of such degrees are normally exempt from needing further academic qualifications to practise engineering in those countries.
