Tyco Integrated Systems has won a major contract from Transport for London to supply, install and commission 200 CCTV cameras and ancillary equipment for monitoring road traffic, as part of a significant expansion of London’s traffic management facilities.

Most of the cameras will be used for bus lane monitoring and enforcement across central London, while others will be employed for general traffic surveillance. Nine camera sites with Automatic Number Plate Reading facilities have been installed, expanding the journey time monitoring system.

The ANPR installations include a high performance colour camera for general traffic observation, and a high sensitivity monochrome camera for reading number plates under widely varying lighting conditions.

TIS is providing the complete system including installation of cameras, poles and mountings, street cabinets and local cabling, and a new fault management system, with full documentation and training, for fast response to any faults.

Tyco is also looking after factory acceptance testing, local camera installation testing, and full site acceptance testing of the complete system, as well as liasing with local authorities for relevant approvals. The system feeds into an existing control room equipped with a large video matrix, provided by Tyco on a previous project.

TfL project manager Steve Vigis said the CCTV extension would help TfL manage traffic more effectively and improve bus lane enforecement throughout London.

“This extension will help to reduce journey times and ease congestion,” he said.
