2:50PM Phase one of Portland Gate Development scheme gets planning permit

Leeds Metropolitan University has won planning permission for phase one of the Portland Gate development scheme.

Cost management firm Turner & Townsend has been appointed QS for the £32m scheme that includes the construction of Rose Bowl, a new business school to be added to the university’s Faculty of Business and Law.

Engineering consultancy Arup and architect Sheppard Robson have been appointed to design and construct the new building.

Located on an existing car park in central Leeds, to the rear of the Civic Hall, the 11,800 sq m building comprises teaching spaces, lecture theatres, offices and restaurants.

Design director and partner for the project Rod McAllister said: “The Rose Bowl will literally reflect the Grade II listed hall and the city’s skyline and serve to figuratively unite the civic and education quarters of Leeds.”

Phase two of the Portland scheme, a mixed use concept with commercial, office and residential space, has also received outline planning permission.

Phase one is expected to start in March 2007 and complete by 2008.
