Trett’s new associate director Steve Williams talks to QS News about the secret of analysing delays and Liverpool FC’s role in his promotion

What will your priority be in your new job?

My priority will be to advise clients on their best options for avoiding and/or managing disputes and also to provide guidance on different methods of analysing delay and disruption.

Do you have any tips for delay analysis?

Even when analysing vast amounts of data and using complicated delay and disruption analysis techniques, it is always best to present your findings in a simple format which can be understood immediately, but most importantly is supported by the facts.

The most challenging aspect of your job?

The lack of records kept by some construction companies makes analysis of delay and disruption more challenging.

Most interesting project so far?

It’s difficult to decide. In fact, I find that it is the people that you work with on these projects that make the work interesting as much as the projects themselves and I have been very fortunate to work with some very experienced people from within Trett Consulting, our clients’ organisations and their legal representatives.

What have been your career highs/lows?

I have had so many highs – the main ones being each time we achieve a good result for our clients. From a personal viewpoint, being asked to manage the Hong Kong Office for Trett Consulting and recently being promoted to associate director. For my lowest, see below...

Where were you when Liverpool won the Champions League?

I was in the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul with 40,000 other reds fans – just before half time was the lowest point in my career, when Liverpool were three nil down, how could I face going back to work in Manchester?! However, things changed dramatically in the second half and winning big ears for the fifth time and in the manner we did was a dream. I think my boss gave me promotion to associate director in the hope that I would not go on about ‘that night’ in Istanbul – it didn’t work...
