Hurray for Kier Southern, whose staff are inspiring students at Queens’ School, Bushey with structural engineering lessons involving marshmallows and sweets and a tower-building competition.

Before Kier stepped in to offer site visits, lessons and activities, pupils were all failing their construction GCSEs. Last year, all of them passed, with 52% getting A-C grades, higher than the national average. Martin Serrao, the assistant head teacher, attributes the success to Kier’s involvement. This year, Kier Southern’s team under the leadership of design and build co-ordinator Paul Bywater organised a competition to build a model tower using straws, tape and glue.

And the 16 GCSE pupils will be visiting Kier’s £15.8m project, The Hub, a four-storey office building in Hatfield.
