Council tenants in Tower Hamlets voted on Tuesday to transfer their homes to new social landlord Eastend Homes.
The £40m transfer of 1493 homes in the Mile End East area is the first of several that could emerge as part of Tower Hamlets’ housing choice programme.

The programme asks residents to consider whether transfer would improve their estate.

Tower Hamlets, which has 35,000 homes in total, applied to the Housing Corporation for four partial transfers last year, of which Mile East End is the first to be balloted on. It applied for 17 more partial transfers this year.

A spokeswoman said this type of transfer suited the varying needs and conditions of different estates.

Turnout for Tuesday’s ballot was 59.2% and 55.9% of voters said yes to transfer.

Eastend Homes will set up a resident-controlled Community Housing Trust to run the homes.
