The ODPM announced last month that it will beef up its Code for Sustainable Homes following pressure from the industry.
Tougher water and energy efficiency standards will apply and the minimum energy efficiency requirements will be greater than those in the Building Regulations.
When the code was published, members of the steering group were angry because it had been watered down from the version they approved. Robert Napier, chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund in the UK, resigned.
