Leicester council this week became the first local authority in the country to gain a three-star rating from the Audit Commission’s housing inspectorate for its repairs and maintenance service.

Inspectors were impressed by Leicester council’s tenant-focused service and its efficiency in targeting its resources. The council’s regular stock condition surveys as well as a policy of dealing with the “worst first” meant only 14% of its stock currently fails to meet the decent homes standard.

Chief inspector Roy Irwin said: “Despite a challenging social and economic environment and a large housing stock with a demanding age and build profile, Leicester has shown that the decent homes standard can be achieved by taking a sensible and thoughtful approach to maintenance services.”
