Key places to visit include:

Delhi

A mix of the ancient, the colonial and the modern await in India’s capital. In Old Delhi visit Jama Masjid the largest Mosque in India. While Lutyens’ New Delhi is a must see for every student of architecture.

Mumbai

The city’s best-known landmark is probably the Gateway of India, but there is also much to see of Mumbai’s golden period in Mumbai Fort. Chowpatty beach, meanwhile, is one of the city’s most popular beaches.

Bangalore

The city is renowned for its reputation as India’s silicon valley, but it also boasts many attractive gardens. The Vidhana Soudha, meanwhile, is a spectacular granite structure built in the Dravidian style which houses both the State Legislature and Secretariat.

Kolkota (Calcutta)

Home to more than 10 million people, Kolkota is the whole of India in microcosm. Industrial, regal, dishevelled, bustling, spiritual – Kolkota has something for everyone.

Hyderabad

Sometimes called the Istanbul of India, Hyderabad is a big city flavoured by both Hindu and Muslim tradition. Now a major IT centre, Hyderabad is home to the Charminar, a beautiful and distinctive monument built in 1591.

The Taj Mahal in northern India is one of the most visited attractions in the world. This beautiful and heartfelt expression of one man’s grief is built of a thousand stories and in a variety of influences.
