The latest quarterly statistics released by TruckPol show that the most common methods of crime against freight in the UK are theft of a vehicle (with or without its payload) and ‘jump-ups’ (the actual theft of goods from a vehicle).
Speaking about the statistics, detective sergeant Mark Hooper commented: “In spite of TruckPol’s emphasis on the importance of being vigilant against crime, the majority of lorry thefts continue to happen when keys are simply left in the ignition. At best, only the driver’s bag or mobile phone will be stolen, but at worst the whole lorry goes. Such losses are almost always avoidable.”
Hooper continued: “At TruckPol, we’re busily working to build up a picture of freight crime in the UK. We’re also encouraging people to come forward and contact us if they’re involved in any road freight crime incident.”
Contact can be made via e-mail through the web site (at www.truckpol.com)
Talking to SMT about the problem, Peter Vyvyan-Robinson (managing director of pan-European counter-crime service Eurowatch) commented: “We’re concerned that foreign vehicles in particular are prone to crime by deception in the UK.”
