Atul Patel has got his Roman emperors mixed up (HT 11 February, page 20).
Augustus did not have the idea of restoring power to the Senate, quite the reverse, indeed he was the first Roman emperor after the Roman Republic. The emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled the Roman Empire two centuries after Augustus, is the emperor Atul meant to refer to in the film Gladiator.
P.S. I admit the titles “Caesar” and “Augustus” were traditionally conferred on Roman emperors.
