A new defintion of the QS has appeared on Wikipedia, the massively popular online encyclopedia. Wikipedia works by creating definitions of subjects which can be edited by any web user.

The definition highlights two distinct parts of the profession - the practicising QS and the contractor's QS. Of the first it says: "The functions of the QS are broadly concerned with the control of cost on construction projects, however this covers a range of activities which may include cost planning, value engineering, feasability studies, cost benefit analysis, lifecycle costing, valuation, and cost estimation."

It defines the contractor's QS as "responsible for all legal and commercial matters within the contracting organisation - in fact their commercial leaning has meant that in many organisation they are now termed commercial managers rather than QS's".

The page also includes a pop culture slot on the profession, which highlights where most people have heard of the profession. It says: "This fairly obscure profession is familiar to some who would otherwise not have heard of it because it was one of the punchlines in the Monty Python bookshop sketch: the shopowner locates a book entitled Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying."

The page was created this month.
