The status of engineering services craftspeople has been given a welcome boost following an historic agreement struck between the ECA and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE).

The two bodies have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to promote professional engineering standards within the electrical contracting industry (page 14).

The IIE is to introduce a new ‘Engineering Craftsman’ grade of membership. Leaving aside the non-inclusive moniker, the move will offer a welcome first step on the ladder for those aspiring to professional careers in the industry.

Registration as an Engineering Craftsman is open to those that can demonstrate their competence and show a commitment to maintaining that competence, working with professional codes and participating actively in the profession.

Good news then that EMC has this month launched a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiative in conjunction with Mid Career College (pages 57-60). Engineering institutions view CPD as an essential activity for members and we hope you find our modules a time-efficient way of keeping in tune with the latest developments.
