Held at the Haberdashers Hall, this annual event is a chance for the CIBSE President to hand out awards and thank those who have contributed to the work of the Institution over the past year.

The Hays Building Services President’s prize encourages students to aim for excellence. Each university nominates two students in the final year of a CIBSE-accredited building services degree. This year’s winners were:

  • Third prize: Mark Griffiths (Loughborough University)
  • Second prize: Carol Clark (Loughborough University)
  • First prize: Thomas Spalton (Nottingham University).
Rabah Boukhanouf accepted the trophy for the winner’s university.

The Happold Brilliant Award recognises excellence in the teaching of building services engineering and was won by Hong Kong Polytechnic University and accepted by Dr John Gilleard. A CIBSE Silver Medal was presented to Peter Koch for his work on calculating fluid flow in pipes and ducts.

Presentations were made for technical papers published by the Institution. The Napier Shaw Bronze Medal for the best paper on a research topic was awarded to X S Lu, T Lu, V Penttala and T Lehtinen (Helsinki University and Finnish Ministry of Environment).

The Carter Bronze Medal for the best paper relating to application and development went to M Davies, M Tirovic, Z Ye and P H Baker (The Bartlett, Cranfield University, Open University and Glasgow Caledonian University).for the paper “Study of heat and moisture transport for concrete sandwich panel wall construction”.

for their paper “A low cost accurate instrument to measure the moisture content of building envelopes in situ”. Both papers were published in Building Services Engineering Research & Technology during 2004.
