Is anyone else tired of hearing about the industry’s ‘image problem’? Apparently it’s the reason for a lack of skilled tradesmen, too few middle managers, under par graduates, too few women, a lack of leadership at board level… you name it.

Cowboy builders get the blame. Although just who and where these rogues are is a bit of a mystery. CIOB research commissioned last year showed that the majority of householders are very happy with the service they receive from small builders and tradesmen.

I think the answer lies a little closer to home. The best advert for construction should be the people who work in it… and their magazine.

We hope you like the new design, which reflects our new editorial goal: to inspire and elevate by showcasing the industry’s achievements and innovations, as well as continuing to tackle the big issues. Let us know what you think.

Construction is a challenging, exciting, different sort of an industry to work in. If you need convincing, turn to page 14. We’ve picked out five projects from around the world which would make the jaws of any teenager drop.

Smaller jobs can be inspiring too. When CM visited the site for our cover photo (Harry Neal’s £4m refurbishment of three town houses in central London for Portman Estates), the first thing we noticed was the atmosphere: distinctly friendly. There was banter in the site office and a cheery ‘All right, girl’, on the way through site.

That sort of working environment is priceless. A smile at work is worth 10 outside it. As part of a small team, you can help create that sort of positive atmosphere – or not.

So next time you’re tempted to open your mouth and say: ‘Recommend this to my kids? You must be joking. I’m hoping they’ll get into IT,’ take a deep breath and say: ‘I’d recommend this job to anyone. It’s probably the best job in the world.’
