Hurrah for EG Carter & Co and Bramall Construction which were placed 18th and 54th respectively in the Sunday Times' 100 Best Companies to Work For list. Both firms are Chartered Building Companies and CIOB training partners.

EG Carter received a whacking 89% from staff for running the firm on sound moral principles, ranking the company sixth in this respect. MD Michael Carter puts this down to "old-fashioned courtesy, good manners and respect". Values have been passed down to him, as the third generation of this 60-year-old firm and he looks to employ people who fit in with the firm's ethos.

Bramall Construction came 10th out of 100 on work-life balance. Dave Prescott MCIOB, managing director of the north-west business said: "We are quite flexible as an organisation and have sufficient resources of people to do the job." He added that the family-owned business retained its strong family values while remaining professional.

Bramall also scored highly for developing all of its 1,171 staff, with 90 training courses available and employees moving up the ranks at all levels. Being a training partner has helped with this, says Prescott. Since it signed up with the CIOB mid-2003, 12 people have become MCIOBs, six associates and seven incorporated.

Under CIOB's Training Partners scheme, staff fill in an assessment form which is analysed by the CIOB, and training tailoured to that person using in-house or external courses.

Construction recruitment firm Hill McGlynn & Associates came in at number 78 in the survey.
