The Association of London Government does not support withdrawing housing benefits as the carte blanche approach to tackling antisocial behaviour.

It is possible that it could form part of a wide range of tools, but boroughs must be able to have the discretion to use what powers they see fit for each individual cases.

Removing benefit should be done only after careful consideration. It is a serious step with wider consequences, particularly as it would exacerbate the poverty faced by already vulnerable households.

Antisocial behaviour can undermine people’s health, cause distress and hold back regeneration by creating an environment in which crime can take hold. But it is vital that any steps taken form part of a carefully managed, holistic system on a case-by-case basis.
