The 2006 National Training Awards saw Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus, back the need for industry training. Simpson said: "Too many employers in too many sectors don't appreciate the need for skills training and have left the principle of apprentices behind. I am delighted that we are rewarding young people who are successful in their training." Simon Bartley, SummitSkills chair added: "The British economy will not succeed unless we have engineers who are able to change a dead building into something for business or homes."
16 awards were presented to apprentices, engineers and management personnel within the building services sector. Four new awards were introduced including Outstanding achievement in the electrotechnical industry, won by Daniel Glew of Southern Electric Contracting, pictured receiving the award from SummitSkills chief executive Keith Marshall (right) and Simon Bartley (left).
