Faber Maunsell has been commissioned by Corus and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) to help make zero carbon buildings a reality.

The Target Zero project, instigated by Corus and the BCSA, is an initiative to provide designers with guidance to meet emissions reduction targets for five major building types including schools, warehouse, office, supermarket and mixed use.

For the £1 million project Faber Maunsell/AECOM will generate fully costed solutions for each sector demonstrating how to achieve the three highest BREEAM ratings and meet changes to Part L of the Building Regulations. Cyril Sweett will assist as cost consultant.

The five building types will be investigated in sequence and guidance will be issued at three month intervals from Summer 2009. The first report will focus on the education sector.

“Alan Todd, general manager of Corus Construction Services and Development, says: “The schools study has already identified potential annual energy savings of £165 million nationally, equivalent to £22 per pupil.”
