The latest news on the cost impact of the Code for Sustainable Homes, government consultation on construction waste and Faber Maunsell's appearance on YouTube.

Code for Sustainable Homes to cost extra 3%

A new report released last week claims that reaching Level 3 of the new Code for Sustainable Homes will cost around 3% more than the old EcoHomes 'Very Good' standard. The research, by QS firm Cyril Sweett, was published for English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation and also found that costs could vary widely for different house types and technologies, so the range of additional spend could be anything from 0.4% to 6.2%. Reach level 3 of the code will see a reduction of 25% in carbon dioxide emissions per home and water savings of 21 litres per day.

Government consults on waste plans

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs last week issued plans to radically reduce the amount of waste produced in construction, which it claims amounts to 109 million tonnes every year. The department intends to make Site Waste Management Plans a legal requirement for all projects in England over £250,000. The department is seeking consultation from the industry on its proposals.
