Our cover is just a bit of fun – we don’t really think you spend your whole holiday snapping foreign construction sites and the antics of their workers (do you?). And please forgive our stereotypes, we know there are some building-mad mummies out there too (some people might say I’m one of them), but in reality there are still far more daddies.

On a serious note, it can be useful to have a look at how other countries do things. We really could learn something from visiting the Laser Mégajoule nuclear test centre in France or Mestre Hospital on the outskirts of Venice, two of the projects featured in our cover story on page 14. And at the other end of the spectrum, looking at some of the less well-managed sites on holiday might just remind us how good UK standards are, particularly with respect to health and safety.

Our columnist this month, Ghada Abuzaid, a Sudanese woman with a proud construction heritage who is studying for her PhD in the UK, reminds us about just how good our reputation overseas has been. It’s only internally that we have a negative image of the industry, she says on page 10.

And incoming CIOB president Martin Chambers thinks we should be exporting our construction know-how to India. He says it is an important, growing market and that the institute should be there, exerting its influence. Find out more about Chambers on page 11.

CM’s on holiday too

The next issue of Construction Manager will arrive on your doormat in September. We hope you have a good summer and a relaxing holiday if you’re able to take one. And we’d love to see your (construction) holiday snaps, so please send them in.
