Having read the article (BSj 10/07) on the Hong Kong Sars outbreak with interest, but also with concern, it begs the question of where was the public health engineer in all this?

It is normal practice to take the basin waste into the floor gulley in situations like this or into another appliance to ensure the gulley trap is kept topped up and cannot dry out, as in this case. This does not need research. It is not rocket science but our practice for the past 40 years-plus, in my experience.
