Homelessness charity Centrepoint has called for a ban on using bed-and-breakfast hotels for homeless 16- and 17-year-olds.
The call comes in the wake of research published last month by the charity showing that such teenagers spend an average of 16 weeks in bed and breakfast – 10 weeks longer than the legal limit for families with children.
The study, of 30 local authorities, found that more than a quarter of them had no plans for how they would accommodate 16- and 17-year-olds.
A Centrepoint survey of teenagers in B&Bs found a significant number had been approached by other residents trying to sell them drugs or for sexual exploitation.
Centrepoint and the Local Government Association are to survey councils on the number of teenagers they put in B&Bs.
